Beautiful Savior Hymn History
This hymn was originally written in German though no one knows who the author was.
It was first published in 1677 in the Roman Catholic’s “Münster Gesangbuch” translated as Munster Hymnbook, Munster being the name of a city. It had five stanzas.
There were other versions that appeared that had some differences from this version.
The song as we know it now is a translation by Joseph Seiss a, Lutheran Pastor. He is the one who gave it the title ‘Beautiful Savior’.
He grew up as Moravian before converting to the Lutheran church.
He was ordained as a Lutheran minister at Gettysburg College and Seminary at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
For those of you who are familiar with the history of the American Civil War you will remember that this is where a pivotal battle of that war was fought.
And it is where Abraham Lincoln gave the famous Gettysburg speech. The speech that included the famous words, “hat this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
