Jesus Loves Me Lyrics
Anna B. Warner, 1820 -1915
Jesus loves me!
This I know,
For the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to Him belong;
They are weak but He is strong.
Chorus
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so.
Jesus loves me!
Loves me still,
Tho I’m very weak and ill,
That I might from sin be free,
Bled and died upon the tree.
Jesus loves me!
He who died
Heaven’s gate to open wide;
He will wash away my sin,
Let His little child come in.
Jesus loves me!
He will stay
Close beside me all the way.
Thou hast bled and died for me;
I will henceforth live for Thee.
Jesus Loves Me Story
The author of the words of this song, Jesus Loves Me, is Anna Warner. It was originally written as a poem for a dying child.
The request for the poem came from Annas sister, Susan.
It was meant to offer encouragement and comfort to that dying young patient.
I believe that this simple poem did its magic as it has done to me and others that used to love to sing this song in our Sunday or Sabbath schools.
I can see a smile on that young patient as that poem was read to him or her.
I believe it gave that dying patient courage to face death with a smile knowing that the first death is not final.
It certainly gave hope to this patient. Hope that this Jesus who loves us is able through his sacrifice to open heaven’s gates for us each one of us.
Jesus Loves Me is now one of the most famous children’s Christian songs ever.
It has been translated into hundreds of languages.
You can hear it deep in the jungles of Africa, Asia, to the big cities of this world.
Today I came across as story from China in the early days of Communisms when most Christians went underground as the Communists clamped down on organized religion.
Soon after assuming power in 1949, western Christian missionaries had to leave China.
And because of the control that the communists exert on the media and any form of communication the Christians in Chinas were completely cut off from fellow Christians elsewhere.
There was an information blackout and many people interested in that part of the world wondered how the Chinese Christians were fairing.
Despite this clampdown some news did leak out.
However, to avoid Chinese censors the senders of messages had to be ingenious to avoid getting into trouble with the authorities.
In one of the messages received in 1972, there was a sentence which read, “The this I know people are well”
And with this simple sentence that included a phrase from this song, Christians in the west knew that their fellow Christians in China were well.
It is my hope that the simple words of this song will warm your heart and give you courage as you face everyday challenges.
The master of the universe loves you and that should give comfort and encouragement to all of us, no matter what you are going through at this moment.
After all, through his death, Jesus now has the keys of hell and heaven. He is in charge of your life, and you can entrust all you have to him.
