Some Day the Silver Cord Will Break

Some Day the Silver Cord Will Break Lyrics

Author: Fanny Crosby (1891)

1 Some day the silver cord will break,
And I no more as now shall sing;
But oh, the joy when I shall wake
Within the palace of the King!

Refrain:
And I shall see Him face to face,
And tell the story—-Saved by grace;
And I shall see Him face to face,
And tell the story—-Saved by grace.

2 Some day my earthly house will fall,
I cannot tell how soon ’twill be;
But this I know-—my All in All
Has now a place in heav’n for me. (Refrain)

3 Some day, when fades the golden sun
Beneath the rosy-tinted west,
My blessed Lord will say, “Well done!”
And I shall enter into rest. (Refrain)

4 Some day: till then I’ll watch and wait,
My lamp all trimmed and burning bright,
That when my Saviour opes the gate,
My soul to Him may take its flight. (Refrain)

Some Day the Silver Cord Will Break Hymn Story

“Some Day the Silver Cord Will Break” is a hymn that was written by the famous hymn writer Fanny Crosby. It was the result of a request from her friend Mr. L.H. Biglow.

The request was made while they were returning from a prayer meeting where the subject discussed was “Grace”. Mr. Biglow asked his friend Crosby to write a hymn on this topic of Grace.

Crosby took an hour to compose the hymn and gave it to Mr. Biglow who placed it in a safe with other compositions by Fanny J Crosby.

It was apparently forgotten until later when Fanny Crosby was a guest of Ira D Sankey at a conference in 1894.

One evening she was asked to give an address by Mr. Sankey. She initially refused but later relented.

At the end of an earnest address, she finished her remarks by reciting this hymn, beginning,

Some day the Silver cord will break,
And I no more, as now, shall sing.

This is how this hymn became public for the first time and from then on it became widely used.
