Come Holy Ghost Our Souls Inspire Lyrics
1 Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire
and lighten with celestial fire;
thou the anointing Spirit art,
who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart.
2 Thy blessed unction from above
is comfort, life, and fire of love;
enable with perpetual light
the dullness of our mortal sight.
3 Teach us to know the Father, Son,
and thee, of both, to be but one;
that through the ages all along
this may be our endless song:
4 Praise to thine eternal merit,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Come Holy Ghost Our Souls Inspire Hymn History
Come Holy Ghost Our Souls Inspire is attributed to John Cosin. It was specifically produced to commemorate the coronation of King Charles I of England.
John Cosin was one of the officiating churchmen at the coronation. He later became the Bishop of Durham in England.
Unfortunately, twenty four year later, King Charles would die a violent death at the scaffold.
Twenty-four years after being feted with the colorful pageantry that is associated with British royal functions.
Life can be very cruel sometimes. This is especially true of this period when life was cheap.
This was actually a translation of a Latin hymn produced eight hundred years before this translation.
I should point out that at that time hymns had not yet been accepted fully by the church.
But this hymn ended up being one of only two hymns in the 1662 Book of Common Prayer.
Bishop John Cosin left this world in 1672.
Had it not been for this hymn we would have forgotten all about this man but this song helps to remember that on this earth there at one point lived a man known as John Cosin.
Let us join John Cosin in calling upon the Holy Spirit to inspire our souls. Without the presence of the Holy Spirit our efforts will be in vain.
