Standing on The Promises Hymn Lyrics
Russell Kelso Carter (1849-1928)
1 Standing on the promises of Christ, my King,
Through eternal ages let his praises ring;
Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,
Standing on the promises of God.
Refrain:
Standing, standing,
Standing on the promises of God, my Savior;
Standing, standing,
I’m standing on the promises of God.
2 Standing on the promises that cannot fail.
When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,
By the living Word of God I shall prevail,
Standing on the promises of God. [Refrain]
3 Standing on the promises of Christ, the Lord,
Bound to him eternally by love’s strong cord,
Overcoming daily with the Spirit’s sword,
Standing on the promises of God. [Refrain]
4 Standing on the promises I cannot fall,
List’ning ev’ry moment to the Spirit’s call,
Resting in my Savior as my all in all,
Standing on the promises of God. [Refrain]
Standing on The Promises Hymn History
‘Standing on the Promises of God’ is a hymn that was penned by Russell Kelso Carter (1849-1928).
It was first included in a collection of hymns titled, Songs of Perfect Love that was published in 1886.
Carter was co-editor of this hymn book together with John Sweney. author of another classic, Beulah Land.
Russell Kelso Carter wrote this hymn while teaching at the Pennsylvania Military Academy.
While at this Academy he worked as professor of chemistry, natural science, civil engineering, and mathematics.
He was known to be a man of many talents and published books on diverse topics.
Besides being an intelligent man, he was also an exceptionally good athlete in his youth.
Standing on the Promises is probably based on Russell Kelso Carter personal experience.
It is said that when he was around 30 years old, he faced a serious health crisis that helped him to put his trust on God.
In other words, he learned to stand on the promises of God.
During this time, he had a grave issue with his heart and the doctors told him that they could not help him.
There was simply no medical solution for his problem. He just had to wait for his death.
As a result of this decided to claim the promises of God on healing.
As he began to claim these promised his faith increased and over time his heart was healed and lived another 49 years without this heart problem.
I should point out that this was not a presumptuous sort of faith. He understood that even though he had faith, God may have said no to his healing.
However, in his case God said yes. We too can learn to stand on the promises of God and in faith claim his promises.
