Down at the Cross Lyrics

Down at the Cross Lyrics

1 Down at the cross where my Savior died,
Down where for cleansing from sin I cried,
There to my heart was the blood applied;
Glory to his name!

Refrain:
Glory to his name,
Glory to his name;
There to my heart was the blood applied;
Glory to his name!

2 I am so wondrously saved from sin,
Jesus so sweetly abides within;
There at the cross where he took me in;
Glory to his name! [Refrain]

3 Oh, precious fountain that saves from sin,
I am so glad I have entered in;
There Jesus saves me and keeps me clean;
Glory to his name! [Refrain]

4 Come to this fountain so rich and sweet,
Cast thy poor soul at the Savior’s feet;
Plunge in today, and be made complete;
Glory to his name! [Refrain]

Down at the Cross Hymn Story

Elisha Albright Hoffman is the author of this beautiful hymn, “Down at the Cross”. It was first published in 1878.

It is reported that Hoffman wrote this hymn after being influenced by his reading of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

As he pondered this subject, he was filled with gratitude for what God had done by sending his son to die on the cross of calvary in our place.

Of all the major religions, Christianity is the only religion where the deity pays the penalty of the sins of his or their creatures.

Being a prolific hymn writer Hoffman did what was expected of him, he authored a poem in praise of what Jesus had done at the cross.

While he usually wrote both the words and the music, this time the music was provided by John Stockton, a musician and member of Hoffman’s church.

Other songs that were written by Hoffman include, “I Must Tell Jesus“, “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms”, Is Your All on the Altar? Lyrics
