I Must Tell Jesus Lyrics
Author: E. A. Hoffman (1894)
1 I must tell Jesus all of my trials;
I cannot bear these burdens alone;
In my distress He kindly will help me;
He ever loves and cares for His own.
Refrain:
I must tell Jesus!
I must tell Jesus!
I cannot bear my burdens alone;
I must tell Jesus!
I must tell Jesus!
Jesus can help me, Jesus alone.
2 I must tell Jesus all of my troubles;
He is a kind, compassionate friend;
If I but ask Him, He will deliver,
Make of my troubles quickly an end. [Refrain]
3 Tempted and tried, I need a great Savior,
One who can help my burdens to bear;
I must tell Jesus, I must tell Jesus;
He all my cares and sorrows will share. [Refrain]
4 O how the world to evil allures me!
O how my heart is tempted to sin!
I must tell Jesus, and He will help me
Over the world the vict’ry to win. [Refrain]
I Must Tell Jesus Hymn Story
“I Must Tell Jesus,” is another hymn from the pen of prolific hymn writer, Elisha Hoffman. He wrote this song in 1894.
Hoffman was influenced by a pastoral visit to a woman who was going through a tough time. The woman was in great pain and very discouraged.
During the visit Hoffman who was a pastor reminded her on the need to tell Jesus all our trials, joys and discouragements.
The woman who through her trials had forgotten to call upon Jesus responded, “Yes, I Must Tell Jesus”
As Reverend Hoffman left her house, these words, I must tell Jesus, kept ringing in his head. He decided there and then to put them in song to encourage others to tell Jesus everything, good or bad.
One of things I have come to love from Elisha Hoffman is the simplicity of the songs. It is music that is targeted towards congregational singing. You do not need to be a trained singer to sing them as they are straightforward and easy to sing.
This is true of “I Must Tell Jesus”, which I learned long time ago through one of the most famous quartets of my time.
Hoffman other songs include, “Down at the Cross”, “Learning on the everlasting arms“, and “What a wonderful Savior“.
