Glory to His Name Lyrics

Glory to His Name Lyrics

Elisha A. Hoffman

Down at the cross where my Savior died,
Down where for cleansing from sin I cried,
There to my heart was the blood applied;
Glory to His Name!

Glory to His Name,
Glory to His Name:
There to my heart was the blood applied;
Glory to His Name!

I am so wondrously saved from sin,
Jesus so sweetly abides within,
There at the cross where He took me in;
Glory to His Name!

Oh, precious fountain that saves from sin,
I am so glad I have entered in;
There Jesus saves me and keeps me clean;
Glory to His Name!

Come to this fountain so rich and sweet,
Cast thy poor soul at the Savior’s feet;
Plunge in today, and be made complete;
Glory to His Name!

Glory to His Name Hymn Story

Elisha Hoffman is the author of this hymn, “Glory to His Name”. This hymn was first published in 1878.

Elisha Albright Hoffman was born on 7th May 1839 in Pennsylvania. He learned music from his parents and never had any formal music tradition.

His father was a minister of the word of God and as it is to be expected from a minister’s family, they sang songs daily during their worship times.

As a result, Elisha came to love music especially sacred music, believing that a song was “as natural a function of the soul as breathing was a function of the body.”

He attended Union Seminary and after graduation worked for the Evangelical Association’s publishing house in Cleveland, Ohio for eleven years.

He later was ordained to the ministry by the Presbyterian church and pastored several churches in Ohio, Michigan, and Illinois.

He was one of the most prolific hymn composers of his time. He composed over two thousand hymns.

His hymn compositions included, “Are you washed in the blood?“, “What a Wonderful Savior“, “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms“, “I Must tell Jesus”, “No Other Friend Like Jesus”. and “Is your All on the Altar?”.
