Jesus Lives! Thy Terrors Now

Jesus Lives! Thy Terrors Now Lyrics

Author: Christian Fürchtegott Gellert

1 Jesus lives! The vict’ry’s won!
Death no longer can appall me.
Jesus lives! Death’s reign is done!
From the grave Christ will recall me.
Brighter scenes will then commence;
this shall be my confidence.

2 Jesus lives! To him the throne
high o’er heav’n and earth is given.
I shall go where he is gone,
live and reign with him in heaven.
God is faithful; doubtings, hence!
This shall be my confidence.

3 Jesus lives! For me he died;
hence will I, to Jesus living,
pure in heart and act abide,
praise to him and glory giving.
All I need God will dispense;
this shall be my confidence.

4 Jesus lives! I know full well
nothing me from him shall sever.
Life nor death nor pow’rs of hell
part me now from Christ forever.
God will be a sure defense;
this shall be my confidence.

5 Jesus lives! And now is death
but the gate to life immortal;
this shall calm my trembling breath
when I pass its gloomy portal.
Faith shall cry, as fails each sense:
Jesus is my confidence!

Jesus Lives! Thy Terrors Now Hymn History

‘Jesus Lives! Thy Terrors Now’ is a hymn that was composed by German Lutheran hymn writer, Christian Fürchtegott Gellert. This is an Easter hymn that has blessed millions all over the world.

This hymn was translated from German to English by Frances Elizabeth Cox.

Christian Fürchtegott Gellert was born on 4th July 1715 at Hainichen in the Saxon Harz, near Freiberg, Germany. He was the son of Christian Gellert a pastor.

As is almost always with pastor’s kids young Christian wanted to follow his father’s footsteps and therefore went to study theology at University of Leipzig.

After finishing his theology studies, he joined his father as an Assistant. Unfortunately, his memory was so bad that he could not preach from memory and had to rely on his notes.

In those days preaching from a manuscript was frowned upon and therefore Christian had no choice but to leave the ministry.

He became a private tutor and eventually became a lecturer in philosophy. It is said that as Professor of Philosophy he filled his lecture room to overflowing.

He was loved because of his passion in teaching and also his caring nature and he took interest in the personal welfare of his students

His love was not plastic as he is known to have given away so much to the poor and those that need him that he died a poor man.

A story is told of how when the Prince Henry of Prussia visited him, he found him in one empty room without food and fire.

His love was indeed deep and that is clear in the hymns that he composed.
