Peace Perfect Peace in This Dark World of Sin Lyrics
Author: Edward Henry Bickersteth
1 Peace, perfect peace, in this dark world of sin?
The blood of Jesus whispers peace within.
2 Peace, perfect peace, by thronging duties pressed?
To do the will of Jesus, this is rest.
3 Peace, perfect peace, death shadowing us and ours?
Jesus has vanquished death and all its powers.
4 Peace, perfect peace, our future all unknown?
Jesus we know, and he is on the throne.
5 It is enough: earth’s struggles soon shall cease,
and Jesus call to heaven’s perfect peace.
Peace Perfect Peace in This Dark World of Sin Hymn History
Peace Perfect Peace in This Dark World of Sin is a hymn that was written by Reverend Edward Henry Bickersteth in 1875. It was based on a sermon on Isaiah 26:3, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee” by Canon Gibbon.
In the sermon Bickersteth says Gibbon alluded to the beauty of the phrase “perfect peace” as rendering the repeated word, “Peace, peace” in the original Hebrew.
Later that day Bickersteth visited a dying relative whom he found to be really troubled in the mind.
Bickersteth there and then took a piece of paper and wrote this hymn, “Peace Perfect Peace in This Dark World of Sin” and read it to the dying man.
