Under His Wings Lyrics
Author: William Cushing
1 Under His wings I am safely abiding;
Though the night deepens and tempests are wild,
Still I can trust Him–I know He will keep me,
He has redeemed me and I am His child.
Refrain:
Under His wings, under His wings,
Who from His love can sever?
Under His wings my soul shall abide,
Safely abide forever.
2 Under His wings, what a refuge in sorrow!
How the heart yearningly turns to His rest!
Often when earth has no balm for my healing,
There I find comfort, and there I am blessed. (Refrain)
3 Under His wings, O what precious enjoyment!
There will I hide till life’s trials are o’er;
Sheltered, protected, no evil can harm me,
Resting in Jesus I’m safe evermore. (Refrain)
Under His Wings Hymn History
“Under His Wings” is a hymn that was written by Reverend William Cushing. The music was added by Ira D Sankey and the tune is called, “Under His Wings I am Safely Abiding”.
Reverend William Orcutt Cushing was born in 1823 at Hingham, Massachusetts.
At youthful age of eighteen he became a minister and pastored the Christian Church in various parts of New York.
He retired after serving for only 27 years due to ill health. He suffered from creeping paralysis that eventually led to him losing his voice.
In retirement he felt that God wanted to use his talent for writing and as a result he authored several hymns and other writings.
He passed away in 1903 in New York.
Other hymns that he authored include, O safe to the Rock that is higher than I; I am resting so sweetly in Jesus now; When He cometh, when He cometh and, There’ll Be No Dark Valley.
