Bread of the World Lyrics
Author: Reginald Heber
1 Bread of the world in mercy broken,
wine of the soul in mercy shed,
by whom the words of life were spoken,
and in whose death our sins are dead.
2 Look on the heart by sorrow broken,
look on the tears by sinners shed;
and be thy feast to us the token
that by thy grace our souls are fed.
Bread of the World Hymn Story
Bread of the World is a hymn that was written by Reginald Heber in 1827. Heber is mostly known for his most famous hymn, “Holy, Holy, Holy”.
Heber was a very gifted person. By the age of seven he had translated a Latin classic into English verse by verse.
How many seven year olds can even claim to have achieved such a feat? None that I am aware of.
He entered Oxford University at the age of seventeen and won two awards for poetry.
He then joined the ministry of the Anglican church becoming the Bishop of Calcutta in 1823. He died of stroke in 1826.
