Only a Sinner Hymn Story
“Only a Sinner” is a Christian hymn that was composed by James M Gray. The tune for this song is called “Naught have I gotten but what I received”.
This hymn discusses the doctrine of grace. In Christianity we are all saved by grace through faith. There is nothing we can do to be declared righteous in the eyes of God.
As Paul says in the bible book of Galatians if righteousness could be gotten by observing the law, then Christ died for nothing.
The reason Christ came to die on the cross is because we could not save ourselves. As the song says, we are only sinners saved by grace.
God’s grace is his unmerited favor. We did nothing to deserve his grace.
James M Gray was born on 21st September 1935 in New York city. He was a minister in the First Reformed Episcopal Church.
He later became dean of the Moody Bible Institute and while there helped in compiling a hymnal for the Institute.
