Shepherd Me, O God Lyrics
Shepherd me, O God, beyond my wants,
beyond my fears, from death into life.
1 God is my shepherd, so nothing shall I want,
I rest in the meadows of faithfulness and love,
I walk by the quiet waters of peace. [Refrain]
2 Gently you raise me and heal my weary soul,
you lead me by pathways of righteousness and truth,
my spirit shall sing the music of your name. [Refrain]
3 Though I should wander the valley of death,
I fear no evil, for you are at my side,
your rod and your staff, my comfort and my hope. [Refrain]
4 You have set me a banquet of love
in the face of hatred,
crowning me with love beyond my power to hold. [Refrain]
5 Surely your kindness and mercy
follow me all the days of my life;
I will dwell in the house of my God forevermore. [Refrain]
Shepherd Me, O God Hymn Story
“Shepherd Me, O God” is a Christian hymn that was composed by Marty Haugen. Haugen was born in 1950.
He was raised in an American Lutheran Church but worked for the Roman Catholic church as a Church musician.
He composed several hymns that have been included in many hymnals and have also been translated into several languages.
In this hymn God is referred to as a shepherd. This song is a paraphrase of Psalm 23.
Just as a shepherd takes care of sheep under his care, making sure that they are fed and protected so does our God. He cares for us deeply and he makes sure that our needs are met through his abundant grace and mercy.
In John 10, Jesus calls himself the good shepherd. Below are a few verses from John 10:
11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away—and the wolf snatches them and scatters them.
