We Shall Meet By and By Lyrics
1 We shall meet beyond the river,
By and by, by and by;
And the darkness will be over,
By and by, by and by;
With the toilsome journey done,
And the glorious battle won,
We shall shine forth as the sun,
By and by, by and by.
2 We shall strike the harps of glory,
By and by, by and by;
We shall sing redemption’s story,
By and by, by and by;
And the strains for evermore
Shall resound in sweetness o’er
Yonder everlasting shore,
By and by, by and by.
3 We shall see and be like Jesus,
By and by, by and by;
Who a crown of life will give us,
By and by, by and by;
And the angels who fulfill
All the mandates of His will
Shall attend, and love us still,
By and by, by and by.
4 When with robes of snowy whiteness,–
By and by, by and by;
And with crowns of dazzling brightness,
By and by, by and by;
There, our storms and perils past
And with glory ours at last,
We’ll possess the kingdom vast,–
By and by, by and by.
5 There our tears shall all cease flowing,
By and by, by and by;
And with sweetest rapture knowing,
By and by, by and by,–
All the blest ones, who have gone
To the land of life and song,–
We, with shoutings shall rejoin
By and by, by and by.
We Shall Meet By and By Hymn Story
“We Shall Meet, By and By” also known as ” We shall meet beyond the river, bye and bye” is a hymn that was written by John Atkinson in 1867.
John Atkinson was born in New Jersey on 6th September 1835 and was a minister in the American Methodist Episcopal Church.
the Rev. John Atkinson a Methodist minister was in his study one night in study one night in 1867 musing on the life after death and on the reunion that he would some day enjoy in Heaven with his mother who had recently been called home to glory.
It was while he was thus musing that the words of “We Shall Meet Beyond the River” came to him.
They hymn of faith in Heaven, he said later ‘seemed to sing itself into my heart’.
“I had better write it down” Atkinson thought, “or I shall lose it.” And so, in the quiet of his study, “and not far from midnight” according to his own story, he wrote the verses one by one as they are sung today.
