Open My Eyes That I May See Lyrics

Author: Clara H Scott

1 Open my eyes that I may see
glimpses of truth thou hast for me.
Place in my hands the wonderful key
that shall unclasp and set me free.
Silently now I wait for thee,
ready, my God, thy will to see.
Open my eyes, illumine me,
Spirit divine!

2 Open my ears that I may hear
voices of truth thou sendest clear,
and while the wave notes fall on my ear,
ev’rything false will disappear.
Silently now I wait for thee,
ready, my God, thy will to see.
Open my ears, illumine me,
Spirit divine!

3 Open my mouth and let me bear
gladly the warm truth ev’rywhere.
Open my heart and let me prepare
love with thy children thus to share.
Silently now I wait for thee,
ready, my God, thy will to see.
Open my mouth, illumine me,
Spirit divine!

Open My Eyes That I May See Hymn Story

“Open My Eyes That I May See” is a hymn that was written by Clara H. Scott in 1895.

This hymn was inspired by Psalm 119. In verse 18 it says, “Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law”.

Clara Harriet Fiske Jones Scott was born in 1821 in Illinois. She learnt music at Chicago Musical Institute soon after its opening.

She used that knowledge in hymn writing, composing, and publishing.

She was the first woman in the United States to publish a volume of anthems. She was helped in this endeavor by the famous musician Horatio Palmer.

She died a painful death in 1897 after she was thrown off a horse carriage after the buggy’s hold-back strap snapped. She died instantly.
