Power in the Blood

Power in the Blood Lyrics

Hymn writer: Lewis E. Jones (1899)

1 Would you be free from the burden of sin?
There’s pow’r in the blood, pow’r in the blood;
Would you o’er evil a victory win?
There’s wonderful pow’r in the blood.

Refrain:
There is pow’r, pow’r, wonder-working pow’r
In the blood of the Lamb;
There is pow’r, pow’r, wonder-working pow’r
In the precious blood of the Lamb.

2 Would you be free from your passion and pride?
There’s pow’r in the blood, pow’r in the blood;
Come for a cleansing to Calvary’s tide–
There’s wonderful pow’r in the blood. [Refrain]

3 Would you be whiter, yes brighter than snow?
There’s pow’r in the blood, pow’r in the blood;
Sin-stains are lost in its life-giving flow–
There’s wonderful pow’r in the blood. [Refrain]

4 Would you do service for Jesus, your King?
There’s pow’r in the blood, pow’r in the blood;
Would you live daily His praises to sing?
There’s wonderful pow’r in the blood. [Refrain]

Power in the Blood Hymn Story

Power in the Blood is a hymn composed by Lewis Edgar Jones in 1899. He wrote over two hundred songs over his life.

Lewis Edgar Jones was born in 1865 in Yates city, Illinois. The family later moved to Iowa where Lewis lived until the age of twenty-one.

After that he went into business for a while before he attended, the Moody Bible Institute. Afterwards he worked for the YMCA in Iowa and other places.

Most of his songs were inspired by sermons that he had heard, and this hymn is not different.

Power in the blood was composed after Jones heard a sermon titled, “Power in the blood of Jesus” at a camp meeting in Maryland.
