Praise My Soul the King of Heaven

Praise My Soul the King of Heaven Lyrics

Praise, my soul, the King of Heaven;
To His feet thy tribute bring.
Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven,
Evermore His praises sing:
Praise Him, praise Him, praise Him, praise Him!
Praise the everlasting King.

Praise Him for His grace and favor
To our fathers in distress;
Praise Him still the same as ever,
Slow to chide, and swift to bless.
Praise Him, praise Him, praise Him, praise Him!
Glorious in His faithfulness.

Fatherlike He tends and spares us,
Well our feeble frame He knows;
In His hands He gently bears us,
Rescues us from all our foes.
Praise Him, praise Him, praise Him, praise Him!
Widely yet His mercy flows.

Angels, help us to adore Him,
Ye behold Him face to face;
Sun and moon, bow down before Him;
Dwellers all in time and space,
Praise Him, praise Him, praise Him praise Him!
Praise with us the God of grace.

Praise My soul the King of Heaven Hymn History

‘Praise My Soul the King of Heaven’ was composed by Henry Francis Lyte in 1834. It is based on Psalm 103.

Henry Francis Lyte was born on 1st June 1793.

In 1814 he graduated from Trinity College Dublin.

He was a very talented scholar who won the English prize poem on three occasions.

It was therefore surprising to those around him that he eventually chose to pursue theology and was ordained in 1815.

And in the ministry, he was not favored to pastor big churches but was assigned a remote country parish in Southern Ireland.

But that is how God works and it was in that small parish where he encountered something that challenged the beliefs, he had held dear.

This is how it happened.

A neighboring clergyman was terminally ill.

This clergyman confessed to Lyte that he had just discovered through studying the New Testament that you cannot rely on your good deeds and religious duties to have peace with God.

He told him that to have peace with God one had to trust completely in the mercy of Christ and his saving power.

Before this Henry Francis Lyte had made fun of the Methodists in his area for their beliefs.

But this encounter encouraged him to change and to start trusting completely in the atoning sacrifice of Christ for his salvation.

It is this changed man and his change in perspective that influences the hymns that he went on to compose including today’s hymn.
