Are You Sowing the Seed? Lyrics
Are you sowing the seed of the kingdom, brother,
In the morning bright and fair?
Are you sowing the seed of the kingdom, brother,
In the heat of the noonday’s glare?
Refrain:
For the harvest time is coming on,
And the reapers’ work will soon be done;
Will your sheaves be many? Will you garner any
For the gathering at the harvest home?
Are you sowing the seed of the kingdom, sister,
In the still and solemn night?
Are you sowing the seed of the kingdom, sister,
For a harvest pure and white?
Refrain
Are you sowing the seed of the kingdom, brother,
All along the fertile way?
Are you sowing the seed of the kingdom, sister?
You must reap at the last great day!
Refrain
Are You Sowing the Seed? Hymn Story
“Are You Sowing the Seed” sometimes titled, “Sowing the Seed of the Kingdom” is a hymn that was composed by Palmer Hartsough. It was first published in 1888 and revised in 1896. The present version is another rework of the hymn by Frederick Augustus Fillmore around 1930.
This hymn is based on the parable Jesus Christ gave about the Sower who went out to sow. It is found in Matthew 13. Below is what this parable says:
3 And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow;
4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up:
5 Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth:
6 And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.
7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them:
8 But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.
9 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
Sowing in this parable stands for the spreading of the word of God to the world. The results of our effort will vary depending on the people we reach. Some will respond positively while others may not.
Regardless of the results we achieve we should never give up. Let’s continue sowing.
