Angels From the Realms of Glory Lyrics
1 Angels from the realms of glory,
wing your flight o’er all the earth;
ye who sang creation’s story
now proclaim Messiah’s birth:
Refrain:
Come and worship, come and worship,
worship Christ, the newborn king.
2 Shepherds, in the field abiding,
watching o’er your flocks by night,
God with us is now residing;
yonder shines the infant light: [Refrain]
3 Sages, leave your contemplations,
brighter visions beam afar;
seek the great Desire of nations;
ye have seen his natal star: [Refrain]
Angels From the Realms of Glory Hymn Story
“Angels From the Realms of Glory” is a Christmas carol that was written by James Montgomery in 1816.
The song is a call to major participants in the story of the birth of Christ. The major participants are the angels, the shepherds, and the sages. The song calls them to come and worship Christ the newborn king.
James Montgomery was born in 1171 to Moravian parents. He had an independent mind that got him into trouble.
For example, he was briefly imprisoned when as editor of a radical newspaper he printed a song that celebrated the fall of Bastille. He also fought against slavery when it was not easy to do so.
