Song of Simeon

Song of Simeon Lyrics

1 Now may your servant, Lord,
according to your Word,
depart in exultation.
My peace shall be serene,
for now my eyes have seen
your wonderful salvation.

2 O Lord, you did prepare
for people everywhere
a Light for revelation,
and radiant glory shall
the gloom of death dispel
for Israel, your nation.

Song of Simeon Hymn Story

“Song of Simeon” is a versification hymn that was created by Dewey Westra. It was first published in 1931. This song is based on Luke 1 and 2.

Simeon was a holy and righteous man who had been waiting for the Messiah. The Spirit had revealed to him that he would not die before seeing the Messiah.

On the day that the parents of Jesus had taken him to the temple to be presented to the Lord, the Spirit led Simeon to the temple.

When he saw Christ, he took him in his arms and praised God saying,

29 “Sovereign Lord, now let your servant die in peace,
as you have promised.
30 I have seen your salvation,
31 which you have prepared for all people.
32 He is a light to reveal God to the nations,
and he is the glory of your people Israel!”
